Introduction
With amendment 2 of the IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition now live, many questions have been asked by those within the Electrical industry as to how the new documentation and accompanying changes will affect them.
In response to the changes to the Requirements for Electrical Installations, PPL Training have launched a new 3 day 18th Edition Wiring Regulations course. Attending and successfully completing the assessment, will provide delegates with a City & Guilds 2382-22 qualification.
Where Can I Gain a New 18th Edition Amendment 2 Qualification?
All changes to the British Standard will be covered within PPL Training’s course, designed to enable you to demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition known as BS7671:2018 (Amendment 2 2022) Requirements for Electrical Installations. The course will be available at our York, Slough and Bathgate (Scotland) centres, with the first opportunities to attend being as follows:
Slough = 3rd May 2022
York = 17th May 2022
Bathgate (Scotland) = 27th June 2022
What Are The Changes in The 18th Edition Amendment 2?
Key changes include but are not limited to:
- RCD - Testing parameters, their use in protecting sockets, who needs to use them (instructed and skilled persons), automatic disconnection, additional protection requirements
- AFDDs - Now affecting HRRBs, HMOs, purpose built student accommodation and care homes
- Chapter 42 - Taking into account RCD and AFDD requirements, as well as general limitations for cabling ensuring compliance with fire safety regulations, including requirements for the protection of cabling in non-combustible material, conduit or trunking
- Appendix 13 - Now gives guidance on cables in protected escape routes and fire protection; and fire sealing of penetrations.
- Chapter 44 - Revision regarding transient overvoltages where indirect lighting strike or damage from such may result in serious injury, loss of life, failure of a safety service or significant financial or data loss
- Part 6 - The way that we test and inspect is changing, including changes to forms and additions to inspection items
- Part 7 - A significant change has been made in respect of sources for SELV or PELV deemed suitable for use in a number of installations or locations. Including: socket outlet locations near baths or showers; disconnection of a supply using RCDs near fountains; industrial plug and socket outlets; additions to regulations around installation of cables on construction and demolition sites; supply of current-using equipment on a site; conducting locations with restricted movement; new regulation relating to functional earthing/supplementary bonding; medical locations (IT systems, ME systems, X-ray equipment, operating table adjustment gear, busbars, IT system transformer locations, diagrams and documentation of EBBs); installations of exhibition shows and stands; expansion of the section relating to Solar PV; supervision of installation; EV Charging equipment; heating cables and heating systems
- Part 8 - new Chapter 82
- Prosumer low voltage electrical installations - A new chapter containing requirements & recommendations for the design, erection & verification of all types of low voltage installations to comply with current and future ways of delivering electricity to current using equipment from both public and locally produced energy sources/storage systems
- Appendix 6 - Major changes to model forms to reduce the amount of form filling. Including: An example checklist for inspection; changes to ensure relevant data capture in the Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate; certification and reporting requirements (Six-monthly operation of the integral test button of RCDs and, where fitted, AFDDs. Status checks on SPDs. Warning notices where an installation includes alternative or additional sources of supply)
How Will The Changes to The 18th Edition Impact Other Qualifications or Projects?
As confirmed by City & Guilds on Tuesday 29th March, The new 2382-22 (Amendment 2) will not be implemented in the Inspection and Testing course immediately. The 2396 will not be assessed to amendment 2 until our December examination date however, designed projects for the 2396 can be completed to either AMD 1 or 2 upto September 2022. After September all submissions for the project must conform to AMD2.
Contractors under taking Project works between now and September 2022 will not be immediately affected by the new amendment. However, after September 2022, all contractors are expected to install new works from September 2022 to the new requirements.
