The latest version of 'BS 8580-1 Water quality. Risk Assessments for Legionella Control Code of practice' has now been released (published 30th January 2019).
If you are a Duty Holder or the appointed Responsible Person managing/controlling the risk of Legionnaires’ disease in the workplace, you need to have an awareness of the British Standard BS 8580. The initial BS 8580 was published back in 2010 and provides a guide to risk assessments performed with the intention to identify and manage risks associated with Legionnaires disease.
Since the initial standards were released, updates have been made to provide recommendations and guidance on the assessment of the risk of Legionella in artificial water systems. The new standard applies to those in businesses or trades where work has taken place in relation to water being used or stored in circumstances that could cause a reasonably foreseeable risk of exposure to legionnaires disease.
The standard also applies to risk assessments being undertaken on premises, plant and systems for the first time. Reviews and audits will be required where a previous assessment has been undertaken and where control measures might have been implemented.
Following the revision of the above documents, one description of the risk assessment process and outputs does not fit all. For example residential property assessments are at one end and hospitals at the other.
The revision also takes into account HSG 282 - Control of legionella and other infectious agents in spa-pools – a system that was published in January 2017. There was also a need to update references within the standard.
